israel :: independence day

asaf :: on the occasion of the 59th israeli independence-day a local daily newspaper proposed 6 illustrators to provide an image under the title "what happened to us?".
I had couple of different ideas but decided to go with this illustration of Srulik, an old israeli icon.

Srulik was created by israeli cartoonist Dosh (Kariel Gardosh, 1921-2000) around 1956 and representated everything good about what young israel wanted to believe she is made of - idealism, zionism, good faith and kindness.

srulik by Dosh

almost 60 years later that old dream looks like a childish fantasy. between this war and the next, most of the government officials are under some sort of investigation, and the gaps between rich and poor are bigger than ever.
