korean gamers :: The New York Times Arts & Leisure

asaf :: this was for the cover of the Sunday Arts & Leisure section of the Times, featuring a story about Korean video game gods. in America, the top gamers are hardly big celebrities, but in Korea they're gigantic superstars -- way larger than life, pop culture heroes.

the first two sketches presented variations of the same idea - I was looking for an interesting clash between the geekness and the high-tech aesthetics related to super-heros.

the AD was interested in the second one, where the image is cut in half and the bottom part shows the "real" life of gamers next to the keyboard. they asked to turn the image horizontal, and change the keyboard to joysticks.

the final art was sent

but it turned out the joysticks are irrelevant in this context and that half of the illustration needed to be modified back to the keyboards.

Okkervil River :: The New Yorker

tomer :: the indie-rock band Okkervil River had a show at the Bowery Ballroom a few weeks back and the New Yorker was looking for a ‘live’ image of the band playing on stage. after digging around the web for visuals and looking at the pics sent by the AD I’ve organized a horizontal composition basing the drawing on some of these visuals.

At this point the composition had to be reorganized to fit a shorter wider proportions.

SKy magazine :: office psychodrama

asaf :: this was done for Sky magazine about how conniving and caddy women can be when it comes to moving up in the business world. the AD was aiming for some sort of psychodrama between two women in the office/cubicle setting.

three ideas came to mind for depicting the confrontation between women.

they went for the voodoo solution, but asked for a small modification - make the foreground lady older and mean, which is what I did.

after the final was sent I was asked to tune down the old lady's expression. I guess I got carried away.
